Yes. According to the Directive 2011/24/EU, the Directive 95/46/EU, the Directive 2000/31/EC and the Directive 2002/58/EC of the European Union, a service provider like ScaleUpCare is required to be legally established in his own country and can’t be forced to register in another country only because it provides services to a foreign client (“principle of the country of origin”). In practice, this means that as long as you agree to our terms of use, ScaleUpCare may provide therapy to you legally.
We are all effective members of the Order of Portuguese Psychologists, which is the regulatory board for the practice of psychology in Portugal. You may confirm our membership here. Yes. In fact, although this is still a developing field, there is already a large body of research regarding online therapy via video-conference and the results are clear: videoconferencing therapy is effective and a viable way to provide therapy. Moreover, virtually every study that we know of, seem to show that videoconferencing therapy is at least as effective as in-person therapy. You may read more about it here.
We use end-to-end encrypted communication software compliant with both HIPAA as well as the GDPR. Besides, we have rigorous safety procedures regarding data you may provide to us or documentation we may produce about you. Specifically, all information that we receive or produce about you is encrypted and password-protected, as well as the e-mails we might exchange. Only your psychologist and you will have access to this password. If at any time, you feel that there has been a breach, please contact us immediately. When you make your first appointment, you agree to be automatically registered in our website. This means that you have an account as member of the website. If you would like to cancel or reschedule an appointment, you would have to log-in, access your account and reschedule or cancel your appointment from there. This process is free.
